Impactful Science Policy Writing

Empowering scientists to engage society

Scientists and other researchers have knowledge and information that could be useful to policymakers, and to their constituents. But working with policymakers - building trust, and finding opportunities for collaboration and discussion - requires a skill set that most experts lack.

During this session, Dr. Adriana Bankston from the Journal of Science Policy & Governance offered suggestions and strategies for researchers who would like to use their findings to support policymakers and policymaking. She also discussed opportunities for early-career scientists to publish their policy work in ways that are more likely to reach government officials and others.

Key takeaways from this webinar:

  • Synthesize, frame and tailor evidence to their needs
  • Key things to consider: Who is your audience? What is your message for your audience? What medium will you use to communicate your message to your audience?
  • Use people centric language, use terms defined by the community, and write for a global audience.

“One thing I tell people is that you want to have something a policymaker can read on the way from the elevator to their desk. You may get 30 seconds of their time, so give them the bottom line. What is the thing you want them to know?” - Dr. Adriana Bankston
